Love it!!!!September 10, 2010 HPvet(Geneva, Illinois) I am hooked (pun intended) on Shimano reels. Previously, I have used three of the plastic variety and am accustomed to the quick fire release. When it came time to upgrade, I decided to get another quick fire model. I am actually pretty pathetic without that button...
This one is like silk compared to my old plastic models. Also, I found no spooling or line issues after a week of hard fishing for Northern Pike in Canada using Fireline. I also appreciated the smooth drag compared to the rear drag models I have owned. In fact, the drag worked well on everything from a 38" northern to a 18" Smallmouth without any readjustment. I wasn't sure about the two handles, large spool and weight but found them all to be beneficial for Northern Pike fishing. Did I mention my 29" and 32" Walleye? A trip to remember......
This is the second unit I purchased. Wanted to have two in the boat in case one does break in Canada or to quickly change lures.
Shimano Spirex for Steelhead and SalmonJuly 5, 2010 tcw(Vancouver, WA USA) I have two Shimano Spirex reels, a 2500 and a 4000. Both have front drag. I use them while steelhead and salmon fishing in the rivers of western Washington. Both are excellent reels in comparison to the many other spinning reels I have owned in the past. The 4000 is heavier but casts further due to the larger spool diameter. The 2500 is lighter which adds up over a long day of fishing. Both are up to the task of handling any fish I have been fortunate enough to hook. My one wish would be for a spool insert for the Spirex 4000 so refills wouldn't take so much line. I had one occasion where the bail did not return promptly on the 4000, this was quickly solved with a cleaning rag and a little high speed oil. After consulting with an employee of the company I use 10# test Maxima Ultragreen due to its ability to withstand the abrasion of spinner blades and rough bottoms without weakening.
So far love itJune 22, 2010 Depth and Speed(Wisconsin) So far I love it, the two handle design and quick fire fit me perfectly.
Why Pay More..........Great Reel!!!June 7, 2010 Robin D. Oneil(Frankenmuth, MI) I bought this for a Fly-In Fishing Trip to Canada. This is an extremely smooth reel and the Quick Cast finger trigger operates beautifully. Why would you want to pay more for something else?? Long casting, great retrieve and it feels great in the hand. It has a reversible handle as most spinning reels do, and this one is a double handle. My reel is an "RG" (Rear Drag) model and it is what I prefer. No salt water in Michigan......
great reelMay 4, 2010 M. Phillips i love the spirex reels Iv got some of the older models and this newer model with the improved trigger. the older model over time the trigger would not work as well. with this blue 09 model the trigger is much better. all i use on 6 rods are spirex reels ... easy to use.. cast far... low cost... whats not to like about them? and to the other reviewer here... the last time i checked it does have an anti-reverse .. I dont know why you would think that it dosnt..
